Up and Down the River Paddle Ball
A partner league on several paddle courts with low nets: after each short game, the winner moves up one court toward the 'king court' and the loser moves down. Students face opponents of similar skill, use simple strategies like finding open space, and learn to respect the result.
How to play
- Set up 6 courts about 10 x 20 ft in a row with a low net or rope about 28 in high; number them 1 (king court) to 6. Two students play on each court and one serves as a rotating referee (3 min).
- Cooperative warm-up rally on each court to dial in power (3 min).
- 3-minute games: serve underhand, one bounce allowed, and win the point when the opponent fails to return the ball inside the court (14 min, four rounds).
- On the whistle, whoever is ahead moves up one court and whoever is behind moves down one; the winner stays on court 1 and the loser stays on court 6. Ties are settled with one quick point.
- Each round, the referee steps in to play and the loser on that court referees the next round.
Rules
- Only one bounce is allowed before returning.
- Serve underhand and switch servers every two points.
- Safety: wait for the next court to finish the point before walking behind it to change courts.
- After each game, the two players shake hands or tap paddles.
Variations
Easier
Allow two bounces and make games cooperative: pairs with the longest rally move up.
Standard
3-minute games with one bounce, winners up and losers down.
Harder
On the top two courts, play with no bounce, volleys only.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student always plays on a fixed court with a smaller opponent's side, and the opponents rotate instead.
- Autism: explain the rotation with a drawn diagram of the courts and give a one-minute warning before each change.
- Lower fitness: lengthen the breaks between rounds to 1 minute.
Learning goals
- Use simple strategies to win the point.
- Compete against similar-level opponents and accept the result.
- Referee a classmates' game fairly.
Equipment for a class of 25
- paddles: 25
- foam balls: 8
- low nets: 6
- cones: 24
Teacher tip
The up-and-down format balances games without you having to group by skill. Remember that no one is out: everyone plays every round.
