Under-the-Desk Crawl Maze
Using the classroom's own furniture, students build a maze of tunnels and low passages and travel it by army-crawling, crawling, bear walking, and crab walking. Students build less common locomotor skills, body and spatial awareness, and movement control.
How to play
- Set 8 desks in 2 tunnels of 4, 6 chairs facing each other to form a narrow aisle, and 4 mats. Mark a closed loop with tape arrows (set up beforehand or with students' help).
- Demonstrate each movement: army-crawl under the desks, crawl through the chair aisle, bear walk on the mats, and crab walk face up on the final straight (2 min).
- Split the class into 3 groups starting at different points, 5 seconds apart. One slow lap, then 4 minutes nonstop at each student's pace, passing only in wide areas (6 min).
- Before each lap the teacher calls an animal (snake, puppy, bear, crab) and the whole course is done that way (4 min). Then 3 minutes with a beanbag on the back in the crawling zones.
- Wrap-up: everyone puts the furniture back and each student shares which movement was hardest (3 min).
Rules
- Nobody climbs or sits on desks or chairs.
- One child per tunnel: wait until the previous student's feet come out.
- Keep your head low inside tunnels.
Variations
Easier
Two-desk tunnels, crawling allowed everywhere, and no time limit.
Standard
Full course with four movements and laps at each student's own pace.
Harder
The whole course with a beanbag on the back, or count laps in 3 minutes.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: a parallel route along the aisles, pushing a ball through the tunnels from a wheelchair.
- Visual impairment: a guide partner goes first and calls out each change.
- Autism or fear of tight spaces: replace the tunnel with going under a rope or beside the desks.
Learning goals
- Move in varied ways, adapting the body to the space.
- Sense their body size in relation to obstacles.
- Respect spacing and turns in a small area.
Equipment for a class of 25
- Classroom desks: 8
- Chairs: 6
- Mats: 4
- Roll of masking tape: 1
Teacher tip
Check that desks are stable and have no sharp screws underneath. Have students help set up and clean up; it saves time and teaches them to organize the space.
