Ultimate Zone Defense: Three-Person Cup
An introduction to zone defense in Ultimate: three defenders form a cup around the thrower to block short passes while the other four cover deeper zones. Students work on team defense, communication and patience on offense against a zone.
How to play
- Field about 130 x 65 ft with 15 ft end zones marked by cones. Teams of 7 in pinnies; extra students form a third team that rotates in every 4 minutes (3 min).
- Explain the cup: one defender marks the thrower and two stand about 10 ft to each side, forming a triangle that moves with the disc; the rest guard deep zones.
- Drill against four attackers: attackers pass slowly and the cup shifts with every throw. Switch defenders every 2 minutes (6 min).
- 7v7 game: the defending team must play zone. Score by catching the disc in the end zone; the offense earns a bonus point for 10 straight completions against the cup (9 min).
- Wrap-up: each team explains how it broke the zone (high throws over the top or quick swings to the other side) (4 min).
Rules
- No contact: cup defenders stay an arm's length from the thrower and never strip the disc.
- The thrower has 10 seconds, counted out loud by the marker.
- Players settle calls among themselves in the Spirit of the Game, with no referee.
Variations
Easier
Use a two-person cup and give the offense 15 seconds per possession.
Standard
Three-person cup with mandatory zone defense.
Harder
Teams switch between zone and person-to-person on the teacher's signal and must reset within 5 seconds.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: plays as the fixed middle defender and receives on offense in a zone where nobody can guard them.
- Visual impairment: use bright discs and call the receiver's name before every throw.
- Advanced players: may only throw backhand on offense.
Learning goals
- Coordinate group defensive movement to shut down short passes.
- Communicate on defense to avoid leaving gaps.
- Choose patient passes that beat a zone defense.
Equipment for a class of 25
- frisbees: 4
- cones: 16
- pinnies: 21
Teacher tip
The cup falls apart when all three chase the disc; they must move as one block. Draw the triangle on a whiteboard or set it up with cones to show it.
