Ultimate: The Cup Zone Defense
A tactical ultimate session focused on the cup zone defense, where three defenders surround the thrower to shut down short passes. Students work on defensive coordination and self-refereeing with Spirit of the Game.
How to play
- Explain the cup: three defenders form a semicircle in front of the thrower, one marks and counts, and the rest cover deep passes. No one touches the thrower (4 min).
- 4-on-3 keep-away in a square: attackers try to pass through or over the cup; switch roles every 3 minutes (8 min).
- 7-on-7 games on two fields: the defending team must use the cup; the two extra students sub in after each point (14 min).
- Spirit circle: each team names a clean play by the other team and something that broke down in its own cup (4 min).
Rules
- The marker counts out loud to ten; if the thrower hasn't released the disc, possession changes.
- No contact: the defender always stays an arm's length from the thrower.
- Players call their own fouls; if they disagree, the pass is replayed.
- No running with the disc: pivot on one foot.
Variations
Easier
A cup of four defenders against two attackers, with a count to fifteen.
Standard
A three-player cup, a count to ten, and 7-on-7 games.
Harder
The attacking team may only throw backhand for two straight points.
Adaptations
- Students who are deaf or hard of hearing: the marker counts on their fingers as well as out loud.
- Students who use wheelchairs: play as a deep defender at the back, or as a thrower with no marker and two arm lengths of space.
- Students less skilled with the disc: may catch with two hands, and the team earns a bonus point when they complete a throw.
Learning goals
- Organize a zone defense in ultimate.
- Attack a zone with quick passes and side switches.
- Self-referee with Spirit of the Game.
Equipment for a class of 25
- flying discs: 4
- cones: 16
- pinnies: 15
Teacher tip
The cup breaks down against quick side-to-side passes: if the defense gets tired, use short rotations. The usual mistake is all three cup players crowding the thrower and leaving the field wide open.
