Ultimate Pivot-and-Throw vs. a Marker
A warm-up in groups of three for Ultimate: the thrower pivots on one foot to release a backhand or forehand while a marker blocks one side. It loosens hips and shoulders and trains pivoting, faking, and throwing under pressure.
How to play
- Groups of three with one disc: thrower and receiver 8 m (9 yd) apart between two cones; the marker stands an arm's length in front of the thrower.
- Mobility (2 min): with no marker, pivot to each side 10 times with the foot planted, faking a throw; then easy passes.
- Passive marker (2 min): the marker always blocks the backhand, so the thrower pivots and throws a forehand.
- Active marker (3 min): the marker can switch sides and counts out loud to 8; the thrower fakes and throws to the open side.
- Every 5 throws rotate: thrower to marker, marker to receiver, receiver to thrower.
- Scoring (2 min): one point per completed pass before the count of 8; the group with the most points wins.
Rules
- The pivot foot stays down until the disc is released.
- The marker never touches the disc or thrower and stays an arm's length away.
- Throw to the chest, never the face.
- If the marker reaches 8, the disc changes hands.
Variations
Easier
The marker stands still and always blocks the same side.
Standard
The marker switches sides and counts to 8.
Harder
The receiver moves between two cones and the marker counts to 6.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: pivot in the wheelchair by rotating the torso; the marker uses arms only.
- Hearing impairment: the marker counts with raised fingers.
- Lower skill level: soft disc and a 5 m distance.
Learning goals
- Pivot on a planted foot to open passing lanes.
- Throw backhands and forehands under pressure.
- Loosen the hips, torso, and shoulders.
Equipment for a class of 25
- Flying discs: 9
- cones: 18
Teacher tip
Many students lift the pivot foot on the forehand: have them keep it on a flat disc cone. Ultimate is self-officiated, so the marker calls fouls respectfully.
