5-4-3-2-1 Shake-Out
A quick drama and creative movement warm-up in which the group shakes arms and legs while counting down out loud from 5 to 1, faster each time. It wakes up the body, releases tension, and loosens the group up before an expressive activity.
How to play
- Everyone stands in a circle with room to swing their arms; the teacher leads the first round as a model.
- Round 1 (1 min): shake the right hand 5 times counting '5, 4, 3, 2, 1' out loud, then the left hand, right leg, and left leg.
- Round 2 (1 min): the same but 4 times per limb, then 3, 2, and 1, with no pause between sets.
- Round 3 (1 min): repeat the whole countdown faster and louder; on the last '1', everyone jumps and shouts 'go!'.
- Round 4 (1 min): in slow motion and whispering, to contrast speed and volume.
- Wrap-up (1 min): a student volunteer leads one round and picks the speed.
Rules
- Everyone counts together at the same pace.
- Shake without hitting your neighbor; keep an arm's length apart.
- Land jumps with bent knees.
- No one just watches: you either take part or lead.
Variations
Easier
Arms only, at a slow pace.
Standard
All four limbs with the full countdown and a final jump.
Harder
Add the hips and head (gently) and count in another language.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: shake only the limbs the student can move, or the shoulders and torso.
- Hearing impairment: the teacher shows the count with raised fingers.
- Autism or noise sensitivity: use the whisper version from the start.
Learning goals
- Activate all limbs in a short time.
- Coordinate voice and movement as a group.
- Reduce self-consciousness before expressive work.
Teacher tip
It's a drama-club classic that breaks the ice in five minutes. Your energy sets the group's: go all in and don't worry about looking silly.
