Ultimate Huck and Deep Cut Game
An Ultimate drill built around the long throw: a thrower hucks the disc 80 to 115 ft to a receiver cutting deep with a defender chasing. Students work on long backhand technique, reading the disc's flight and the catching run.
How to play
- Set a throwing line and, 80 ft away, a 30 x 30 ft catch zone marked with cones. Groups of three: thrower, receiver and defender; four or five groups side by side with plenty of space (2 min).
- Technique without defense: long backhand with a step forward, hip rotation and a flat release; the receiver runs and makes a two-hand pancake catch. 6 throws each (5 min).
- With defense: the receiver starts 15 ft in front of the thrower with the defender alongside. A catch in the zone is worth 2 points and outside it 1; a block scores for the defender (6 min).
- Rotate roles every three throws and move the zone to 100 to 115 ft for students who reach it easily.
- Wrap-up: each group discusses which throw was most accurate and why (2 min). Collect discs and cones (3 min).
Rules
- Receiver and defender play the disc, not each other; if they collide, replay it.
- Nobody crosses another group's throwing lane.
- Throw only after the receiver has started and the zone is clear.
Variations
Easier
Catch zone at 50 to 65 ft and a passive defender who only shadows.
Standard
Long throw to 80 ft with an active defender.
Harder
Throw forehand, and the receiver must land with both feet inside the zone.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: throws from a fixed spot with adjusted distances.
- Hearing impairment: the thrower signals the receiver's start with a hand gesture.
- Lower fitness: takes more turns as thrower and receives only once per rotation.
Learning goals
- Throw the disc long and flat with a backhand.
- Judge the disc's flight to catch it on the run.
- Compete for the disc in the air without dangerous contact.
Equipment for a class of 25
- frisbees: 9
- cones: 24
- pinnies: 9
Teacher tip
Throws often come out tilted and curve off; ask for a flat release at chest height. Set groups side by side, never facing each other, to avoid crossing throws.
