Ultimate Horizontal Stack Offense
An Ultimate offensive set in which attackers line up across the width of the field and make cuts toward the thrower or deep. Students practice getting open with changes of pace, using space and coordinating so two players never cut at once.
How to play
- Field about 130 x 65 ft with 15 ft end zones. Groups of 5 offense and 5 defense in pinnies; a third group rests and observes (2 min).
- Set the four non-throwers on a cone line 50 ft from the thrower, about 15 ft apart. Explain the cut: fake deep and come back to the disc, or the reverse (2 min).
- Drill without defense: the thrower points to a receiver, who cuts while the others stay put. After the catch, the line resets (4 min).
- 5v5 half-field drill with person-to-person defense: score by catching in the end zone; only one player cuts at a time, and a cutter who doesn't get the disc returns to their spot (6 min).
- Full 5v5 game with the horizontal stack required after every pull. The resting group rotates in every 3 minutes; finish with tactical feedback (6 min).
Rules
- No contact, and markers stay an arm's length from the thrower.
- The marker counts 10 seconds out loud.
- Cutters always look where they are running to avoid collisions.
Variations
Easier
Attack against three defenders, with cuts toward the thrower only.
Standard
Four-person horizontal stack with one cutter at a time against person-to-person defense.
Harder
The team must complete one deep throw before it can score.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: plays as the fixed central thrower who must touch the disc every possession.
- Shy students: assign a specific spot in the line and a clear signal for their cut.
- Lower fitness: free substitutions with the observing group.
Learning goals
- Make cuts with changes of pace and direction.
- Spread across the width of the field to open passing lanes.
- Coordinate team cuts so players don't get in each other's way.
Equipment for a class of 25
- frisbees: 4
- cones: 20
- pinnies: 15
Teacher tip
The most common mistake is everyone running at the disc at once; stress that waiting in the stack is part of playing. Have the observing group count double cuts.
