UKK Two-Kilometer Walk Test
An alternative aerobic fitness test in which students walk 2 km as fast as possible, without running, and take their pulse at the finish. Nearly every student can do it, and it connects time, heart rate, and cardiovascular fitness.
How to play
- Mark a 400 m (or 200 m) loop with cones and explain the difference between power walking and running: one foot always on the ground with an active arm swing (3 min).
- Two-minute technique check: students walk one straightaway at top walking speed while a partner checks that there is no flight phase.
- Mass start: everyone walks 5 laps of 400 m. The teacher calls out the time whenever someone finishes a lap and each student keeps track of their laps with help from a partner (15 to 18 min).
- When students cross the finish, the teacher calls their final time and they take their pulse for 15 seconds at the neck or wrist and multiply by 4.
- Each student records time and heart rate on their sheet and compares them with a simple chart from the teacher: a faster time and lower heart rate mean better aerobic fitness (3 min).
- Wrap-up: discuss why finishing heart rate matters as much as time and how regular walking could improve both.
Rules
- No running: anyone who breaks into a jog must go right back to walking.
- After finishing, keep walking slowly while taking your pulse; do not sit down.
- Anyone who feels pain or dizziness stops and tells the teacher.
Variations
Easier
Shorten the test to 1 km and allow walking in pairs while talking.
Standard
Power walk 2 km and record finishing time and heart rate.
Harder
Wear a heart rate monitor and record heart rate every lap to see how it climbs.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: cover the 2 km in a wheelchair at a brisk pace or an agreed shorter distance.
- Visual impairment: walk with a sighted guide holding a short tether.
- Lower fitness: set the goal of finishing without stopping, regardless of time.
Learning goals
- Complete a low-impact aerobic fitness test.
- Take and calculate heart rate correctly.
- Value walking as a healthy, accessible activity.
Equipment for a class of 25
- cones: 8
- stopwatch: 1
- recording sheets: 25
Teacher tip
The most common mistake is jogging on the last lap, so name two observers from among students who cannot take the test.
