U-Turn on a Bike Inside a 4-Meter Lane
Students practice U-turns on a bike inside lanes that get narrower, with a shoulder check and a hand signal first, in a closed schoolyard. They also learn the safer option on real streets: get off and walk the bike around.
How to play
- Explain when you need to turn around and why on a real street it is usually safer to dismount and walk across (2 min).
- In a 6-meter lane: slow approach on the right, shoulder check, hand signal and turn looking toward the exit (6 min).
- Narrow the lane to 5 and then 4 m, inside pedal up and weight on the outside pedal (7 min).
- Turns in both directions; a partner records any line touches or foot downs (6 min).
- Walking option: stop, dismount on the curb side and walk the bike around in under 5 seconds (4 min).
Rules
- Helmet buckled for the whole lesson.
- One rider per lane; everyone else waits outside the lines.
- Before every turn, check over your shoulder and signal, even in an empty yard.
- If the turn doesn't work, put a foot down and try again; never force the lean.
Variations
Easier
Only the 6-meter lane, one foot down allowed.
Standard
Lanes of 6, 5 and 4 m with a shoulder check, signal and error log.
Harder
3.5-meter lane, turning on a partner's signal without knowing the direction in advance.
Adaptations
- Nervous riders: turn in the 6-meter lane and practice the walking option a lot.
- Low vision: lane marked with large cones, and a partner calls out the end of the lane.
- Ankle or knee injury: observes and rates technique with the sheet.
Learning goals
- Perform a controlled U-turn in a tight space.
- Build the shoulder check and signal into every maneuver.
- Choose the safest maneuver for the situation.
Equipment for a class of 25
- bikes: 10
- helmets: 10
- cones: 16
- chalk: 3
Teacher tip
If there are not enough bikes, ask the local police or city hall (many run bike safety programs with loaner bikes) or a cycling club, or let students bring their own with parent permission; with 10 bikes, work in groups of three that rotate. Without bikes, take turns walking a borrowed bike around and practice the look-signal sequence on foot.
