Two-on-Two from the Knees: Push Off the Mat with Control
A ground-wrestling game where two teams of two, always on their knees, try to push their opponents off a square mat area. It requires coordinating with a partner, choosing whom to attack and controlling force so no one is put at risk.
How to play
- Explain the game: a four-mat square; a player pushed off steps out, touches an outside corner and comes back in; a team scores when both opponents are out at the same time (2 min).
- Specific warm-up 1-on-1 from the knees: push and drag the partner off the mat in 20-second duels (3 min).
- 45-second 2-on-2 rounds with 45 seconds of rest; the resting team referees (10 min).
- 1-minute tactical timeout per pair to agree on a plan (double-team one, split up), then a new set of rounds against different opponents (3 min).
- Reflection: which plan worked, and how did partners communicate without talking? (2 min).
Rules
- Always on the knees: no one stands up on the mat.
- No grabbing the head, neck or clothing at the collar, and no diving onto opponents.
- Don't push someone who is already leaving the mat.
- The referee blows the whistle to stop the round at any head clash or dangerous fall.
Variations
Easier
Play 1-on-1 and expand the area to six mats.
Standard
2-on-2 kneeling rounds with a tactical timeout and refereeing by the resting team.
Harder
Each pair must score at least one point through an action by the less powerful partner, forcing them to coordinate.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: referees or plays a seated version pushing a large ball off the mat.
- Visual impairment: plays 1-on-1 starting with hand contact, with a teammate calling out the edge of the mat.
- Overweight or knee injury: uses knee pads or a double mat and plays 30-second rounds.
Learning goals
- Coordinate competitive actions with a partner.
- Make tactical decisions about whom and when to attack.
- Adjust force to wrestle safely in a group.
Equipment for a class of 25
- mats: 24
- stopwatch: 6
Teacher tip
Group pairs by build and keep mat areas separate: leave at least 3 feet of open space between them.
