Two Instruments, Two Groups
The class is split into two groups and each group moves only to its own instrument: one to the hand drum and one to the castanets. Students practice listening discrimination, matching their movement to the rhythm, and selective attention.
How to play
- Split the class into two groups: one wearing pinnies (drum group) and one without (castanet group). Students spread out across the playground (2 min).
- Introduce the sounds: on the drum, the drum group takes one step per beat; on the castanets, the castanet group takes quick little steps. Anyone whose instrument is silent freezes like a statue (3 min practice).
- Play by switching instruments and changing the rhythm: slow beats, fast beats, or pauses. When an instrument stops, its group freezes instantly.
- Add new movements: a loud drum hit means a two-foot jump, and a castanet roll means spin in place (4 min).
- Play both instruments at the same time with different rhythms so each group moves at its own speed without following the other (3 min).
- Swap pinnies so the groups switch instruments and play one more short round (3 min).
Rules
- Move only when your instrument is playing.
- If you move without your sound, walk around a cone and come back in.
- Walk or run looking forward so you don't bump into the other group.
- No talking while the instruments play so everyone can hear.
Variations
Easier
Play only one instrument at a time with slow, steady beats.
Standard
Alternate the two instruments with rhythm changes and pauses.
Harder
Play both at once with different rhythms and add a third sound, a clap, which means everyone changes direction.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student responds with arm movements or moves in a wheelchair to their instrument's rhythm.
- Deaf or hard of hearing: a buddy taps their shoulder, and the teacher pairs each instrument with a colored card.
- Higher-skilled students: let them play one of the instruments and change the rhythm to trick the group.
Learning goals
- Tell sounds apart and respond only to their own signal.
- Match movement speed to the rhythm they hear.
- Stop with control when the sound stops.
Equipment for a class of 25
- hand drum: 1
- castanets: 1
- pinnies: 13
Teacher tip
If you don't have castanets, rhythm sticks or two wooden blocks work fine. Make the pauses very clear at first so success comes easily, then speed up the changes.
