Two in One Hoop: Partner Hula Hooping
Two students step inside the same large hoop and try to keep it spinning around their waists by moving their hips together, first facing each other and then back to back. Students practice hula hooping, syncing with another person, and partner communication.
How to play
- Each student has a hoop: quick solo hula hoop review at the waist, one foot forward and rocking front to back (3 min).
- In pairs of similar height, step face to face into one large hoop and try to spin it by pushing together with the hips (4 min).
- Count how many spins the hoop lasts and record the pair's best; rest between tries (3 min).
- Try back to back, then side by side shoulder to shoulder: which gets more spins? (4 min).
- With music, find a way to walk two steps together without dropping the hoop; show your record to another pair (4 min).
Rules
- Rock your hips front to back, not in a circle.
- Pairs count out loud so they push together.
- If the hoop drops, both step out carefully before picking it up.
- Pairs stay 10 feet away from each other.
Variations
Easier
Spin the shared hoop with your hands like a steering wheel, then let go.
Standard
Shared hula hoop face to face and back to back.
Harder
Hula hoop as a trio, or keep it spinning while the pair turns in place.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: share the hoop by spinning it on both partners' arms, seated face to face.
- Shyness or autism: allow the side-by-side version with no contact and let the student pick a trusted partner.
- Skill level: students who can't hula hoop solo yet practice first with a heavier or bigger hoop.
Learning goals
- Keep a hoop spinning at the waist using a hip rock.
- Sync movement with a partner.
- Work together to find ways to beat a record.
Equipment for a class of 25
- hula hoops: 25
- music
Teacher tip
Large, slightly heavier hoops spin better for two; light ones drop right away. Pair students of similar height so the hoop sits at the same level on both waists.
