Two-Gate Fake-and-Go Duels
In a small square, an attacker tries to get through one of two cone gates at the back before a defender, who mirrors every move, can tag them. Students work on faking, explosive cuts and reading an opponent, all without a ball.
How to play
- Set up 12 squares, 5 x 5 yards, 3 yards apart. On the back line, place a 1-yard cone gate at each corner. One pair per square; the extra student is a rotating referee (3 min).
- The attacker starts in the middle of the start line and the defender in the middle of the square, facing each other. The defender can't stand in the gates.
- When the attacker says go, they have 5 seconds to run through either gate without a two-hand touch at the waist. Making it scores 1 point.
- Each pair plays sets of 5 attacks, then switches roles; do 2 sets per role with 30 seconds of rest (6 min).
- Rotation: on the whistle, attackers move one square clockwise to face a new defender (4 min).
- Wrap up with a quick talk: which fake worked best and what does a good defender watch for (2 min).
Rules
- Tag with two hands at the waist, no grabbing or pushing.
- The attacker must go within 5 seconds or the defender scores.
- Safety: no diving and gates stay away from neighboring squares.
- The referee settles close calls.
Variations
Easier
Use 2-yard gates and 7 seconds to attack.
Standard
Five-yard square, 1-yard gates and 5 seconds.
Harder
Add a center gate worth 2 points and cut the time to 4 seconds.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: use a wider square and tag with a pool noodle; the opponent defends at a walk.
- Autism or shyness: keep the same partner for every set with no rotation.
- Higher level: the defender starts closer; lower level: the defender starts on the back line.
Learning goals
- Fake and change direction explosively.
- Read an opponent's movement to choose the moment to attack.
- Defend with lateral steps and a good athletic stance.
Equipment for a class of 25
- cones: 48
- flat disc cones: 24
Teacher tip
Attackers tend to run straight, so teach the jab step: plant outside and push off across. Pair students by height and speed to avoid mismatched collisions.
