Trust Bench Walk with Spotters
In groups of 5, one student walks across a gym bench while the others offer their hands for support on both sides; little by little challenges are added, like crossing with eyes closed or turning in the middle. It is a simple, safe trust challenge that teaches students to help and to accept help.
How to play
- Set 5 gym benches on the floor with mats on both sides and form groups of 5 per bench (2 min).
- Explain the spotter role: two on each side of the bench, open hands at the walker's waist height, moving along with them. The fifth student is the walker (2 min).
- Round one: each student walks forward across the bench, taking whatever hands they need. When they finish, they rotate to become a spotter (4 min).
- Round two: the walker picks a challenge: sideways, on tiptoes, or a half turn in the middle (4 min).
- Round three, optional: walk with a blindfold or eyes closed, guided only by the spotters' hands and voices, who announce when the bench ends (6 min).
- Sitting by the bench, each student shares what helped them feel safe and what their team did well (2 min).
Rules
- Spotters never let go of the walker or joke around while they cross.
- Only one walker at a time, and nobody jumps off the bench: step down carefully at the end.
- If someone says "stop," everyone freezes and helps them step down.
Variations
Easier
Walk along a painted line or a rope on the floor instead of the bench.
Standard
Use a gym bench with spotters on both sides, crossing challenges, and an optional eyes-closed round.
Harder
The walker balances a beanbag on their head, and each spotter may offer only one hand.
Adaptations
- Students with limited mobility can walk a line on the floor with spotters or be the group's voice guide.
- For students with visual impairments, keep the same bench and let them feel its length and end with their hands first.
- For fearful or anxious students, let them choose their spotters and repeat round one as many times as they like.
Learning goals
- Build trust in classmates and in yourself.
- Learn to help others safely and responsibly.
- Improve dynamic balance on a narrow surface.

Teacher tip
Before starting, practice how to offer a hand and check that benches do not wobble; stand where you can see every group and never allow two students on a bench at once.
