Triple Jump: Same, Same, Other on Chalk Marks
A triple jump progression that teaches the step sequence (same foot, same foot, other foot) on chalk marks before reaching the pit. It builds the right rhythm and protects joints with controlled jumps.
How to play
- Walk the sequence: each student says their takeoff foot out loud and walks the marks: "right, right, left" (or the reverse), finishing with a two-foot landing (5 min).
- Standing on grass: three short jumps following the sequence while the partner checks the footwork (6 min).
- Short 4-step approach to chalk marks spaced at comfortable distances, which the partner adjusts based on landings (8 min).
- At the pit: 6-step approach and takeoff from a wide zone, aiming for three similar-length jumps rather than one huge first hop (8 min).
- Final measure: two jumps measured and logged (3 min).
Rules
- Jump submaximally until you've got the sequence down.
- Land with bent knees; if a knee or ankle hurts, stop.
- Rake the pit after each jump.
- Keep the takeoff zone far enough from the pit to land inside it.
Variations
Easier
Walking the sequence and standing jumps.
Standard
Short approach and full jump into the pit.
Harder
Evenly spaced marks with the challenge of hitting them at higher speed.
Adaptations
- Visual impairment: sequence guided by a partner's rhythmic claps.
- Limited mobility: sequence of arm pushes in a wheelchair or steps on the ground.
- Knee discomfort: walk the sequence only and act as measurer.
Learning goals
- Learn the triple jump step sequence.
- Spread the effort across all three phases.
- Jump with safe, controlled landings.
Equipment for a class of 25
- chalk: 6
- cones: 12
- measuring tape: 2
- rakes: 2
Teacher tip
No pit? Do the final phase onto thin mats with takeoff very close. The usual error is landing the second phase on the wrong foot: call it out loud on every attempt.
