Triple Jump on Video: What Share Each Phase Covers
Groups of five film their triple jumps alongside reference cones every meter and work out what share of the total distance each phase covers. Video becomes data for fixing how effort is spread.
How to play
- Setup: cones every meter along the runway and pit; the tablet is mounted at the side, perpendicular and at hip height (5 min).
- Filming: each student does two short-approach triple jumps while the group films and logs the order (10 min).
- Analysis: in slow motion, pause at each foot contact and estimate its position against the cones; calculate each phase length and its percentage of the total (9 min).
- Diagnosis: the group compares splits and suggests a fix for each person (for example, a lower first hop) (4 min).
- Privacy: confirm the videos are deleted from the tablet (2 min).
Rules
- Handle the tablet outside the runway and landing area.
- Only film people who give permission; no personal phones.
- Videos stay in class and get deleted at the end.
- Respect jumping and raking turns.
Variations
Easier
Analyze only the total distance and the first phase.
Standard
Percentages for all three phases.
Harder
Compare your split with an elite reference clip, without making up numbers.
Adaptations
- Visual impairment: a partner describes the video and they calculate percentages on a talking calculator.
- Limited mobility: in charge of filming and the group's calculations.
- Camera-shy: may analyze a model's jump instead of their own.
Learning goals
- Get biomechanical data from video.
- Connect the phase split to how effective the jump is.
- Use digital devices while respecting privacy.
Equipment for a class of 25
- tablets: 5
- measuring tape: 3
- cones: 20
- score sheets: 30
Teacher tip
A free slow-motion camera app on a school device is enough; brace the tablet on a chair with tape so it doesn't move. The usual error is filming at an angle, which distorts distances: it has to be perpendicular to the pit.
