Trio Rotation Workout: Work, Hold, Run
In trios, at the same time one student does reps, another holds an isometric position and the third runs to a cone and back; when the runner returns, everyone rotates. The trio adds up reps as a shared score, which demands teamwork and steady intensity with no breaks.
How to play
- Form trios and place a cone 50 feet from each mat; assign roles: worker, holder and runner (2 min).
- Round 1 (6 min): the worker does squats, the holder keeps a wall sit or air squat hold, and the runner goes out and back; when the runner arrives, everyone rotates.
- Rest (1 min): the trio totals its squats and records them.
- Round 2 (6 min): push-ups for the worker and a plank for the holder.
- Rest (1 min) and round 3 (4 min): alternating lunges and an isometric glute bridge.
- Wrap-up (2 min): each trio shares its total and which role felt hardest.
Rules
- Rotate only when the runner taps the worker's hand.
- Runners go around the outside of the cone to avoid other trios.
- Reps count only with full technique.
- The holder can drop to the knees if the lower back hurts.
Variations
Easier
Shorten the run to 30 feet and power walk.
Standard
Three rounds with different exercises and a 50-foot run.
Harder
The runner sprints with a turn and the holder uses harder versions of the hold.
Adaptations
- For limited mobility, the runner travels a short loop in a wheelchair or throws a light ball at a target.
- For shy students, form trios with trusted classmates and do not compare results publicly.
- Students with lower fitness power walk the run.
Learning goals
- Cooperate in simultaneous, rotating physical work.
- Hold an isometric position with good alignment.
- Keep intensity up during nonstop blocks.
Equipment for a class of 25
- cones: 9
- yoga mats: 9
Teacher tip
Explain that the runner sets the pace: if they are slow, the others work longer. Mix up trios next lesson to balance ability levels.
