Triangle Mini Kickball: Four Fields at Once
Small-sided kickball with three bases in a triangle and small teams on four fields at once, so everyone kicks and fields a lot. No throwing at runners: outs are made at the base.
How to play
- Set up four triangles with cone bases 10 m apart; teams of three or four in pinnies (4 min).
- Rules: the fielding team's pitcher rolls the ball, the kicker kicks it and runs to first; it's an out if the ball is caught in the air or a fielder holding the ball steps on the base before the runner gets there (5 min).
- Game: the whole kicking team kicks once each, then sides switch; a run scores when you make it back home (12 min).
- Swap opponents: teams that are ahead move up a field and the others move down, nobody sits out (7 min).
- Group run tally and wrap-up (2 min).
Rules
- Never throw the ball at a runner.
- The fielder steps on the inside of the base and the runner arrives on the outside.
- Pitches roll along the ground at a kickable speed.
- Each kicker gets up to three pitches.
Variations
Easier
Big ball, and the pitcher is a teammate.
Standard
Three bases, opposing pitcher and outs at the base.
Harder
Before stepping on the base, the ball must go through two fielders.
Adaptations
- Students with visual impairments: a ball with a bell and kicking a stationary ball from a hoop.
- Students with limited mobility: kick a stationary ball with a partner running for them; defend the nearest base.
- Less experienced students: choose a slow roll or a stationary ball.
Learning goals
- Kick toward open space.
- Decide where to play the ball on defense.
- Get many turns thanks to small teams.
Equipment for a class of 25
- foam balls: 4
- cones: 24
- pinnies: 16
Teacher tip
With four small fields each student kicks about six times a lesson, versus once or twice in a big game. Put all the home bases in the middle of the yard and kick outward.
