Triad Square Tag
Tag in groups of three inside small squares: one tagger gets 30 seconds to score as many tags as possible, then the role rotates. Students practice agility, fakes, and quick changes of direction in tight spaces.
How to play
- Use cones to set up 8 squares of 5 x 5 m, about 2 m apart. Put 3 students in each square; one wears a pinny and is the tagger (2 min).
- On the whistle, the tagger has 30 seconds to tag the other two as many times as possible without leaving the square.
- A tagged player must run and touch a cone in their square before they can be tagged again; they are safe on the way to the cone.
- Each tag is one point for the tagger, who counts out loud. On the whistle, the pinny goes to the next player and you repeat.
- After 3 turns (one per student), the top scorer moves up to the square on the right and the lowest scorer moves down to the left.
- Play 4 sets with 30-second breaks to reshuffle groups (about 13 minutes).
Rules
- No one may leave the square; stepping out gives the tagger a point.
- Gentle open-hand tags, no grabbing or pushing.
- A player who was just tagged can only be tagged again after touching a cone.
- Each tagger counts their points out loud and honestly.
Variations
Easier
Use 6 x 6 m squares and 20-second turns so taggers tire less.
Standard
5 x 5 m squares, 30-second turns, and a required cone touch after each tag.
Harder
Use 4 x 4 m squares and make the runners hold hands, so they must coordinate their fakes.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student plays in a larger square and their group moves by walking or hopping, with the same challenge.
- Autism or shyness: form the trio with trusted classmates and keep them in the same square if moving causes anxiety.
- Fitness level: the up-and-down square system naturally groups students by ability so each group competes with peers.
Learning goals
- Use fakes and changes of direction in tight spaces.
- Pace effort to recover between turns.
- Count their own points honestly.
Equipment for a class of 25
- cones: 32
- pinnies: 8
Teacher tip
Moving up and down squares evens out skill levels without leaving anyone out. Enforce the cone touch after each tag to stop taggers from chasing the same player in a loop.
