Transformed Object Improv: The Stick That Becomes Anything
A gym stick stops being a stick: in the students' hands it becomes an oar, a telescope, a guitar or a railroad crossing gate. First individually and then in group scenes, students work on imagination, gesture precision and accepting other people's offers.
How to play
- In a circle, the stick is passed around; each person uses it as a different object for five seconds without talking and the group guesses (4 min).
- Groups of five with one stick: each group picks an everyday object and prepares three linked uses that involve the whole body (5 min).
- One-minute scenes: one student starts using the stick as something; whoever enters must accept that object and add a new one with the same stick (6 min).
- Each group shows two scenes, followed by a short discussion of which gestures made the object believable (5 min).
Rules
- When someone is nearby, the stick always stays below shoulder height.
- Never hit anyone with the stick or throw it.
- Accept the object your partner offers: never block an offer on stage.
- Work without words; sounds are allowed.
Variations
Easier
The teacher writes a list of objects on the board to choose from.
Standard
Free transformations, accepting and building on the previous offer.
Harder
Two sticks on stage must become one large object handled by two people.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: handles the stick from the wheelchair and the scene adjusts to their height.
- Visual impairment: the classmate who enters quietly describes the object before using it.
- Autism: may plan transformations ahead and always start the scene instead of entering.
Learning goals
- Develop imagination and the ability to symbolize with the body.
- Refine gestures so an imagined object becomes believable.
- Practice accepting offers as the foundation of improv.
Equipment for a class of 25
- gym sticks: 6
Teacher tip
Ask for the object's weight, size and temperature to show in the whole body, not just the hands. Have students set the sticks aside during explanations.
