Training Principles Station Rotation
At four stations, students experience the principles of individualization, overload, specificity, and recovery through quick hands-on tests. Then they apply these principles to review their personal program.
How to play
- Explain the rotation and form 4 groups of 6; each station has a card with a task and a question (2 min).
- Individualization: everyone jumps rope for 45 seconds at the same pace and takes their pulse; they record the gap between the highest and lowest heart rate in the group (5 min).
- Overload: a plank where a challenge is added every 15 s (lift one arm, one leg, or both); each student notes the level where it got truly hard (5 min).
- Specificity: 10 tosses with the dominant hand into a hoop on the ground 5 m (16 ft) away, then 10 with the other hand; compare hits (5 min).
- Recovery: two 15-second bouts of high knees, first with a 10-second break and then with 60 seconds; compare heart rate and how it felt (5 min).
- Debrief: each group answers one question, and everyone writes down which principle is missing from their program (4 min).
Rules
- Rotate clockwise on the whistle.
- At the tossing station, nobody collects balls until the last person has thrown.
- Each group leaves its station tidy before rotating.
Variations
Easier
Only three stations, with a suggested answer on the back of each card.
Standard
Four hands-on stations with data recording and application to the program.
Harder
Add a fifth station on reversibility using data from a real case to analyze.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: replace jump rope with ball dribbling and do a seated forearm plank.
- Visual impairment: replace the hoop with a sound target and jump rope with high knees in place.
- Low fitness level: plank on the knees from the first level.
Learning goals
- Experience the basic principles of training.
- Connect each principle with an observed piece of data.
- Review a personal program using these principles.
Equipment for a class of 25
- individual jump ropes: 6
- tennis balls: 12
- hoops: 2
- stopwatch: 4
- task cards: 4
Teacher tip
Keep card questions specific so groups stay focused. Have spare balls at the tossing station.
