Trail Running on School Circuit
Running a course with uphill and downhill sections on or near the school grounds while learning basic trail running technique. Students build aerobic endurance, pace themselves and adjust their stride to uneven ground.
How to play
- Before class, use cones to mark a 400–600 m (roughly quarter- to third-mile) loop with at least one hill, and walk it to clear rocks or branches.
- 5-minute warm-up: easy jog around the course, walking the downhills.
- Technique (5 min): uphill, short steps and active arms; downhill, short steps, eyes ahead and body leaning slightly forward.
- Run at your own pace (12 min): groups of 5 start every 30 seconds and everyone counts how many laps they finish.
- Timing: in pairs, one runs a lap while the other times it, then switch (5 min).
- Walking cool-down and quick discussion of which section was hardest (3 min).
Rules
- The teacher supervises the whole course; nobody leaves the coned route.
- No passing on downhills; control your speed.
- Pass only on the open side and call out first.
- Anyone who feels dizzy or has pain stops and tells an adult.
Variations
Easier
Shorter course with no steep downhill, alternating running and walking.
Standard
Full course at your own pace for 12 minutes.
Harder
Try to beat your one-lap time on a second attempt.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: adapted course on flat pavement, or a timekeeping role.
- Asthma or lower fitness: own pace, walking the uphills and an inhaler nearby.
- Visual impairment: run with a guide and a short tether on the smoothest section.
Learning goals
- Develop aerobic endurance.
- Apply uphill and downhill technique on uneven ground.
- Pace your own run.
Equipment for a class of 25
- cones: 20
- stopwatches: 13
Teacher tip
Stand at the downhill, the riskiest section, and have an injured student or volunteer run the stopwatch at the start.

Accuracy Circuit with Cloth Targets
Accuracy stations with cloth targets on the floor and on the wall, where students toss bean bags and score points by ring. They work on throwing accuracy and matching force to distance.
Acrosport in Groups of 4
Partner and group stunts (acrosport) in groups of 4: building simple human pyramids and balances with bases, flyers and spotters while following safety rules. Students develop strength, balance, cooperation and creativity by linking poses together.
Adapted 6v6 Volleyball
6v6 volleyball with adapted rules so the ball stays in play longer and the whole team takes part: catching is allowed on the first contact and serves come from closer in. Students practice the set, the forearm pass (bump), the serve and rotation.
Adapted Beach Handball
An adapted beach handball game with a soft ball: no dribbling, three steps with the ball, and double points for spectacular goals such as jump or spin shots. It develops throwing, passing and team play in a fun, safe way.
Adapted Beach Volleyball 2v2
Modified 2v2 beach volleyball with a foam ball and portable net on small courts. Students work on the set and forearm pass, communication with a partner and cooperation to build a rally.
Adapted School Triathlon
An adapted school triathlon that links a run, jump rope and a skills circuit, with transitions in a marked zone. Students build endurance, manage their pace and practice switching quickly between tasks.
