Toss the Rag Doll: Sheet Toss Teamwork
Inspired by the traditional carnival custom of tossing a straw doll in a blanket: groups of 6 hold a sheet and, coordinating their effort, toss a rag doll into the air and catch it without letting it fall. Students work on cooperation, group timing, and arm strength.
How to play
- Groups of 6 around a sheet, holding the edge with both hands. Place the rag doll in the middle (2 min).
- Practice the move: on "one, two... three!", everyone lowers the sheet to knee height and lifts it hard together; repeat without tossing (2 min).
- Tosses: the group launches the doll and catches it on a tight sheet. Count tosses in a row without it touching the ground (5 min).
- Challenges: toss it higher, make it flip, or toss it while the group turns a quarter turn (3 min).
- Final challenge between two groups: one group tosses the doll to another, which catches it with their sheet 6 ft away (3 min).
- Fold the sheets together and discuss who gave the count and whether it helped (1 min).
Rules
- Nobody lets go of the sheet while the doll is in the air.
- Only one person gives the count, and it changes with every challenge.
- Safety: only the doll gets tossed, never a person; keep groups at least 12 ft apart.
Variations
Easier
Toss a large soft ball, which is easier to catch, at a low height.
Standard
Toss and catch the doll, counting tosses in a row.
Harder
Pass the doll from sheet to sheet between three groups set up in a triangle.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student holds the sheet from a wheelchair, and the group adjusts the toss height.
- Hearing impairment: the count comes with a head nod everyone can see.
- Lower strength: the student holds a corner, where there's less pull.
Learning goals
- Time movements with the rest of the group.
- Cooperate to reach a shared goal.
- Learn about a popular carnival tradition.
Equipment for a class of 25
- white sheets: 4
- rag dolls (or stuffed animals): 4
Teacher tip
If you can, show Goya's painting of the straw-doll toss at the start; students get the game instantly. Old twin bed sheets work perfectly.
