Top-Rope with a Backup Belayer: Three-Person Rotation
Top-rope climbing on the school climbing wall with three rotating roles: climber, belayer and backup belayer. Only students signed off in ground school take part in belaying, always with school equipment and under the supervision of a teacher with climbing training.
How to play
- The teacher checks the gear and the wall: anchors, ropes, harnesses and helmets; students form groups of three with at least one signed-off belayer (5 min).
- Buddy check before each climb: the climber's figure-eight, both harnesses, carabiner locked and agreed commands (3 min).
- Rotation: the climber goes up a route as high as they choose, the belayer takes in rope and the backup holds the brake strand; controlled lower and role switch (20 min).
- On every third climb, the climber picks a harder route or a constraint, such as using only holds of one color (5 min).
- Wrap-up: each group sums up in one sentence how well they communicated and whether any check was skipped (2 min).
Rules
- No one leaves the ground without a complete buddy check and the belayer's go-ahead.
- Only students signed off by the teacher in ground school may belay.
- Only school equipment is used, inspected before each session, and helmets are worn in the climbing area.
- One rope team per route, and no one walks under a climber.
Variations
Easier
Climb only halfway up the wall on routes with large holds.
Standard
Three-role top-rope rotation with buddy check and controlled lowering.
Harder
The climber plans the sequence of moves beforehand and compares it with what they actually did.
Adaptations
- Fear of heights: sets their own maximum height and may stay in ground roles with no penalty.
- Hearing impairment: rope signals (tugs) and visual signals are agreed on for the commands.
- Overweight: the teacher pairs the student with a suitable belayer and backup and favors less steep routes.
Learning goals
- Top-rope climb using footwork and weight shifting.
- Follow a rope team's safety protocol rigorously.
- Communicate effectively and build mutual trust within the group.
Equipment for a class of 25

- belay devices: 4
- locking carabiners: 8
- helmets: 12
- mats: 4
Teacher tip
If the school does not have a certified climbing wall with inspected anchors or a trained teacher, replace this session with low bouldering over mats. Assign each group a fixed route so you can see every rope at a glance.
