Timed Brännboll: Empty Line Switch
A timed version of Swedish brännboll: a team keeps batting as long as someone is in the batting line, and if the burner burns while the line is empty, roles switch instantly. Students must decide when to come home to keep the inning alive. They practice tactics, batting, and running.
How to play
- Mark four bases in a 50 ft square, a batting area with a hoop, and the burner's hoop beside it. Form two teams of 12-13 (3 min).
- Each batter self-tosses, hits the ball forward, drops the bat in the hoop, and runs; they may stop at any base, and several runners can share a base.
- Fielders get the ball to the burner, who steps in the hoop and yells 'Burn!': anyone between bases goes to the end of the batting line.
- If the burner burns when nobody is left in the batting line, the teams switch: the batting team goes straight out to field.
- Points: 1 per full lap, 3 if done on a single hit, and 2 for the defense for every catch on the fly.
- Play two 10-minute halves, switching as often as needed; the team with more points wins (20 min).
Rules
- Safety: fielders wait at least 25 ft from the batting area.
- The bat goes in the hoop; if it is thrown, the hit doesn't count.
- Each batter gets three tries to hit the ball into the field.
Variations
Easier
The switch only happens if the line is empty and someone is caught between bases.
Standard
Switch on a burn with an empty line and two 10-minute halves.
Harder
Three catches on the fly in one inning also force a switch.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student hits off a cone and a teammate runs for them; on defense, they can be the burner.
- Shy students: start as the one who calls out how many batters are left in line.
- Fitness level: tired students can stay on a base for several hits.
Learning goals
- Decide when to risk a run and when to come home to keep the line going.
- Hit a self-tossed ball toward open space.
- Organize the defense to burn quickly.
Equipment for a class of 25
- soft bats: 2
- tennis balls: 4
- cones: 6
- hoops: 2
Teacher tip
Assign one student to call out loud how many are left in line so the team thinks as a group. Have each fielder cover a zone so they don't all chase the ball.
