Time Machine Drama Journey
The class rides a time machine to different eras (prehistoric times, ancient Egypt, the Middle Ages, the future) and at each stop groups improvise how people moved, worked and played. It blends drama, varied locomotor movement and cultural knowledge.
How to play
- Introduce the machine (2 min): a circle of hoops in the middle is the time machine; four corners each have a hoop and a sign: prehistoric, Egypt, medieval castle and the year 3000.
- Travel (1 min): with music, everyone turns slowly inside the machine counting down from 10. Announce the era and students travel there moving in a fitting way (crawling, walking like an Egyptian painting...).
- Era scene (3 min): groups of 5 improvise a typical activity: hunting a mammoth, hauling pyramid blocks, a tournament on imaginary horses, robots and flying cars.
- On the whistle, everyone freezes in an "era snapshot" and you describe it like a museum tour guide.
- Repeat until all four eras are visited (16 min total), changing how students travel back to the machine.
- Back to the present (2 min): each group says in one sentence which era they liked best.
Rules
- Inside the machine, turn slowly with arms close to the body so nobody gets dizzy or bumps anyone.
- Travel to each era without running, respecting other people's paths.
- Fights and tournaments are always in slow motion and without contact.
Variations
Easier
Visit only two eras and suggest what each group does.
Standard
Four eras with group-improvised scenes and era snapshots.
Harder
Each group invents its own era or place and the class guesses it from their movements.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student is the pilot who announces each era and plays characters who stay put (the pharaoh, the queen).
- Visual impairment: a partner guides during the trips, and each era has its own signature sound.
- Fitness: students may walk back to the machine instead of using demanding movements.
Learning goals
- Portray characters and jobs from different eras with the body.
- Explore varied locomotor movements suited to each scene.
- Improvise as a group by offering and accepting ideas.
Equipment for a class of 25
- hoops: 12
- music: 1
Teacher tip
Check with the classroom teacher to tie in what students are learning in social studies. Keep the spins inside the machine to a few seconds to avoid dizziness.
