Three-Way Sumo in the Rope Circle
Three students wrestle at once inside a rope circle on mats, pushing with their palms to get the other two out. Having a third player forces decisions about whom to push, when to wait, and how to protect yourself, while managing the emotions of shifting alliances.
How to play
- Form groups of three of similar weight and use a rope to make a circle about 10 feet across on the mats for each group (3 min).
- The three stand in a triangle inside the circle, in a low stance with hands in front of their chest.
- On the whistle, each tries to push the others out with palms on shoulders and trunk; anyone who steps outside the rope is out and the bout continues between two (30 seconds max).
- The last student inside scores 2 points and the second-to-last scores 1. Play 5 bouts per group (7 min).
- Regroup students with similar scores and play 5 more bouts; at the end, discuss how it felt when two players ganged up on one (8 min).
Rules
- Push only with palms; no grabbing, leg sweeps, or pushing from behind.
- Anyone who is out moves away from the rope so they are not in the way.
- On the whistle, everyone stops; if someone falls, replay the bout.
Variations
Easier
Use a bigger circle; anyone still inside after 20 seconds wins.
Standard
Ten-foot circle and 30-second bouts.
Harder
No talking: alliances may not be agreed on out loud.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: in a wheelchair, the student rolls foam balls at kneeling classmates; a shoulder hit counts as being out.
- Shyness: let them start as the group judge, counting outs, before stepping in.
- Fitness level: group by level and let students who tire rest one bout out of three.
Learning goals
- Make decisions based on the position of two opponents.
- Manage frustration when at a disadvantage.
- Push with control in a limited space.
Equipment for a class of 25
- ropes: 8
- mats: 24
Teacher tip
Alliances are part of the game, but if players always gang up on the same person, rebuild the groups. Pushing from behind is banned because nobody sees it coming.
