Three-Team Winner-Stays Flag Rugby
Three teams of four rotate through one flag rugby field: the team that scores or wins the ball stays on, the team that fails goes off, and the waiting team comes in. Short, intense games with an active break to plan strategy.
How to play
- Set up two 25 x 15 m (about 80 x 50 ft) fields with a try line at one end. Make 6 teams of 4 in different colored pinnies (the 25th student joins one) and put three teams on each field (3 min).
- Team A attacks toward the line defended by Team B while Team C waits on the side. Basic rules apply: when a flag is pulled, stop and pass backward within 3 seconds; after four flag pulls, the ball turns over.
- If A scores a try, B goes off and C comes on to defend; A attacks again from the start. If B wins the ball, B becomes the attacking team, A goes off, and C comes on to defend.
- The waiting team practices passing on the move and agrees on a play to run when it comes on.
- Each try earns the team 1 point, and teams keep their own score. Play 10 minutes on each field.
- After a 1-minute break, swap the groups between fields so everyone faces new opponents, and play another 10 minutes.
Rules
- No tackling or pushing; flags only.
- Passes always go backward or sideways.
- Safety: waiting teams stand 3 m off the sideline, never on the try line.
Variations
Easier
Allow 6 flag pulls per possession and lengthen the field to 30 m.
Standard
4-on-4 with four flag pulls per possession and three teams per field.
Harder
A try only counts if it is scored by someone who hasn't scored yet during that turn.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: a student using a wheelchair can score by catching a pass in a 2 m zone next to the try line.
- Autism or shyness: give the student a set role, such as taking the restart, and give a heads-up before each team change.
- Fitness level: the waiting team takes a true rest rather than hard drills if someone needs it.
Learning goals
- Plan a simple strategy while waiting and use it when coming on.
- Defend in a line by pulling flags without contact.
- Handle winning and leaving the field with good sportsmanship.

Teacher tip
Walk through one play in slow motion so everyone understands the rotation. If the same team keeps winning, adjust the field or the teams.
