Three-Team Giant Ball with Rotating Captains
A three-team giant ball game in which the captain changes every point: the captain picks the hitter, calls the receiving team and encourages teammates. Everyone leads at least twice, practicing shared leadership and equal participation.
How to play
- Set up two courts with 3 teams of 4 each, wearing three pinnie colors; the extra student referees and tracks turns.
- Each team numbers its players 1 to 4: number 1 starts as captain, and the role passes to the next player every point.
- The attacking team holds the ball with three players; the captain shouts 'Ball!' plus the color of the team that must receive and chooses the hitter.
- The called team must catch the ball before it hits the floor; if it fails, the other two teams score a point.
- Before each serve, the captain gives a tactical cue, and after the point a word of encouragement.
- Play two 9-minute games with a one-minute reflection between them; 4-minute wrap-up on how leading felt.
Rules
- Everyone hits at least once per game before anyone repeats.
- Captains' decisions are accepted without complaining.
- A hit counts only if the whole team is touching the ball.
- Safety: hit with the arms, never the head, and nobody dives to the floor to receive.
Variations
Easier
No scoring, with the teacher coaching each captain.
Standard
A new captain every point with three teams in play.
Harder
Captains may communicate only with gestures, no talking.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: help hold and hit while seated; their captain turns are the same as everyone else's.
- Autism or shy students: the captain may use cards with written calls.
- Low fitness: may rotate in as a ball holder, the least demanding role.
Learning goals
- Lead respectfully and share leadership.
- Cooperate with three teams playing at once.
- Hit and receive a giant ball in a coordinated way.
Equipment for a class of 25
- giant balls: 2
- colored pinnies: 24
Teacher tip
Strong personalities tend to keep giving orders when they're not captain: remind them at every rotation. Check the ball's inflation before starting.
