Three Surfaces, Three Feelings: Steady Run
A steady run guided by feel on three different surfaces near the school: grass, dirt and pavement. Students compare how impact, perceived effort and stride change on each one, and decide which suits them best for runs outside school.
How to play
- Introduce the three loops marked with cones (grass, dirt or packed gravel, and pavement), about 250 meters each (2 min).
- Block 1: 5 minutes of steady running at a conversational pace on the grass loop (5 min).
- Block 2: 5 minutes at the same perceived pace on the dirt loop, walking between loops (5 min).
- Block 3: 5 minutes on the pavement loop, keeping the same feeling of effort (5 min).
- Each student rates on the worksheet, from 1 to 5, the impact on the legs, how easy it was to hold the pace and the grip on each surface, and writes which one they would pick for a long run (4 min).
- Quick group share: pros and cons of each surface and of running in parks versus on sidewalks (4 min).
Rules
- Pace is set by feel: students must be able to speak in full sentences in all three blocks.
- On the pavement loop, stay on the right and don't wear earbuds.
- Check the dirt and grass areas before starting to avoid holes or roots.
- No one runs alone out of the teacher's sight.
Variations
Easier
Three 3-minute blocks with 1 minute of walking in between.
Standard
Three 5-minute blocks at a conversational pace.
Harder
Three 7-minute blocks, then repeat the first one at the end to see if the feeling changes with fatigue.
Adaptations
- Overweight or low fitness: alternates 1 minute running and 1 minute walking within each block.
- Wheelchair user: compares the surfaces pushing the chair or in a sports chair on the accessible sections, rating grip and effort.
- Visual impairment: runs with a guide, who describes the change of surface at each transition.
Learning goals
- Sustain a steady run regulated by feel.
- Analyze how surface affects impact and effort.
- Make informed decisions about where to run in the local area.
Equipment for a class of 25
- cones: 12
- worksheets: 30
Teacher tip
If the school has no dirt area, the third loop can be an athletics track or a path in a nearby park. The worksheets are useful later to talk about preventing overuse injuries.
