Three Steps and Shoot: Team Handball Rules Circuit
A station circuit in columns to learn the team handball rules for three steps, dribbling and three seconds before shooting on goal. It builds coordination between moving, dribbling and throwing while following the rules.
How to play
- Explain the rules (2 min): up to three steps with the ball in hand, one dribble and three more steps, and never more than three seconds holding the ball.
- Make 5 columns of 5. In front of each, place 3 hoops, a 5 m dribble zone between cones, 3 more hoops and a shooting line 5 m from a small goal.
- Round 1 (4 min): receive a pass, step in one hoop per step, dribble in the zone, take three more steps and shoot. Get your ball and jog back along the side.
- Round 2 (4 min): the next student counts 'one, two, three' out loud while the teammate holds the ball; over three seconds does not score. Round 3 (4 min): no hoops, and an observer raises a hand for traveling; every legal goal scores one point.
- Finish (5 min): 3-on-3 on two half courts with a student referee calling traveling and holding; switch referees every minute.
Rules
- Traveling or a double dribble is a violation and the attempt does not count.
- Shoot from behind the line, and nobody walks in front of the goal.
- Start only after the previous shooter has collected their ball.
Variations
Easier
Allow four steps and several dribbles, and shoot from 4 m.
Standard
Three steps, dribble, three steps and a shot from 5 m with an observer.
Harder
Add a passive defender, and in the last round shoot with the non-dominant hand.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility or wheelchair: two pushes with the ball on the lap, one dribble to the side and a shot from 3 m.
- Autism: demonstrate first, use a picture card of the three rules and keep the same column every round.
- Low coordination: walk the course without a ball first, stepping the rhythm through the hoops.
Learning goals
- Apply the three-step and three-second rules.
- Link moving, dribbling and shooting without a double dribble.
- Respect the calls of the student observer and referee.
Equipment for a class of 25
- foam balls: 10
- cones: 20
- hoops: 30
- small goals: 5
Teacher tip
The usual mistake is a fourth step when speeding up, so have students count steps out loud at first. Check that the hoops do not slide on the floor.
