Three-Point Contact: Climb Down, Don't Jump
A lesson focused on climbing down the wall bars safely, facing in and facing sideways, always keeping three points of contact. Students practice downclimbing, looking at their feet, and the self-control not to jump, a skill that prevents many falls.
How to play
- Pairs at each wall bar section, with a mat at the base. Clip clothespins on the bars at about 3 feet and 5 feet high.
- Explanation (2 min): move one support at a time, first a foot, then the hand on the same side; the eyes find the bar before the foot steps.
- Facing-in descent (4 min): climb to the 3-foot clothespin, take it, and climb down bar by bar without jumping off the last one. The partner counts supports out loud: "one, two, three, move."
- Sideways descent (4 min): climb to the clothespin and come down diagonally, moving over one bar to the side with each step.
- Slow-motion descent (4 min): climb to the 5-foot clothespin and take at least 10 seconds to come down; the partner counts the time out loud and calls it if two supports come off at once.
- Wrap-up (2 min): everyone repeats the rule "three points, look, move" and names where it applies outside the gym (playgrounds, rocks, ladders).
Rules
- Always three points of contact: never move two at once.
- Safety: step on the last bar too; nobody jumps to the floor.
- One student per wall bar section.
- Grab the clothespin with one hand while the other three limbs hold on.
Variations
Easier
Work only up to the third bar and climb down facing in.
Standard
Facing-in, sideways, and slow-motion descents from 3 and 5 feet.
Harder
Climb down the last three bars with eyes closed, guided by the partner's voice.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: practice switching supports with the hands on the low bars from the wheelchair.
- Autism: pictures of the "three points, look, move" sequence posted on the wall next to the wall bars.
- Lower strength or fear of heights: stay at 3 feet and do more reps.
Learning goals
- Climb down equipment keeping three points of contact.
- Control the speed of the descent without jumping.
- Recognize risky situations when climbing in everyday life.
Equipment for a class of 25
- wall bars: 12
- mats: 12
- clothespins: 50
Teacher tip
Many wall bar injuries happen on the way down, not up, so give this time even if it looks unexciting. Praise out loud the students who come down slowly.
