Three-Minute Step Test
An aerobic fitness test in which students step up and down on a box about 12 inches high to a metronome for three minutes, then measure their recovery heart rate. It teaches students to assess their own fitness with a simple, safe test.
How to play
- Set the steps at about 12 inches (30 cm) and play a metronome at 96 beats per minute: each beat is one step (up, up, down, down). Practice the rhythm for 30 seconds without testing (4 min).
- Form pairs: A takes the test and B helps with the worksheet. Before starting, A takes a 15-second resting pulse and B records it.
- Wave 1: all A partners step for exactly 3 minutes. Then they sit and, after 5 seconds, count their pulse for 60 seconds while B keeps time with a stopwatch (5 min).
- B records the recovery heart rate and compares it with the reference chart on the worksheet, without sharing it with the group.
- Wave 2: partners switch roles and repeat the protocol (5 min).
- Each student writes their result on the worksheet and sets a goal for retesting in six weeks (6 min).
Rules
- Place your whole foot on the step, never just the toes.
- If you lose the beat, find it again without stopping; if you can't continue, stop and record the time.
- Results are personal: they are not compared out loud.
- Anyone who feels dizzy sits down and tells the teacher; nobody tests with an injury or a recent illness.
Variations
Easier
Use an 8-inch step or set the metronome to 88 beats per minute.
Standard
A 12-inch step at 96 beats per minute for 3 minutes.
Harder
Repeat the test after 5 minutes and compare recovery between the first and second attempts.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: replace stepping with seated arm raises to the same beat and still measure recovery heart rate.
- Visual impairment: the partner taps the shoulder gently to the beat and describes where the step is.
- Low fitness level: allow stopping at 2 minutes and track progress against their own record.
Learning goals
- Complete an aerobic fitness test following a protocol.
- Measure and record recovery heart rate accurately.
- Set a personal improvement goal based on their own result.
Equipment for a class of 25
- aerobic steps: 13
- stopwatches: 13
- music (metronome track): 1
- worksheets: 25
Teacher tip
If you don't have enough steps, use gym benches with several students at once and plenty of spacing.
