Three-Minute Desk Body Scan
A short body scan designed to be done seated at a desk, eyes open and unnoticed by anyone, as a pre-test ritual. Students rehearse it in a room set up like a test so they can carry it over to real situations.
How to play
- Arrange desks in rows like test day; each student sits with feet flat and eyes on the desk (1 min).
- The teacher guides a 3-minute scan: feet on the floor, seat in the chair, back, hands on the desk, shoulders, jaw, and forehead, 20–25 seconds per area.
- At each area, notice the sensation and release tension with an exhale, without visibly moving.
- Repeat the scan in 1 minute using only the teacher's key words (feet, seat, hands, shoulders, face).
- Discuss with a partner when you'd actually use it, then reset the room (2 min).
Rules
- Eyes open or gaze lowered: it has to work during a real test.
- Complete silence during the scan.
- Move desks in pairs, lifting rather than dragging them.
Variations
Easier
Scan only five areas, 30 seconds each.
Standard
Do the full guided scan plus the quick key-word version.
Harder
Each student does the scan on their own in 90 seconds, timing themselves.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: do it in the student's own wheelchair, adapting the contact points.
- Visual impairment: no visual adaptation needed; describe contact sensations in more detail.
- Autism or anxiety: hand out the order of areas in writing so the student knows what's coming.
Learning goals
- Perform a brief body scan in a study position.
- Have a discreet calming ritual for tests.
- Recognize physical signs of stress and let them go.
Equipment for a class of 25
- chairs: 25
- classroom desks: 25
Teacher tip
Recreating the test atmosphere is what makes it transfer. If you're in a small gym, chairs alone work, with hands resting on the thighs.
