Three-Cone L-Drill Head-to-Head Races
In pairs, students race each other on two identical three-cone L-shaped courses, a classic agility drill with tight turns around cones. They work on footwork through the turn, body lean and acceleration out of each curve.
How to play
- Set up 3 double L-courses: cone 1 at the start, cone 2 five yards ahead and cone 3 five yards to the right of cone 2; the second, identical course sits 3 yards away. Put 8 students at each double course (2 min).
- Explain the pattern: sprint to cone 2 and back to cone 1 touching the line, sprint to cone 2, loop around the outside of cone 3 clockwise, come back around the inside of cone 2 and sprint home to cone 1.
- Technique round: everyone runs the course twice at 70% effort, focusing on short steps and keeping the inside hand close to the cone (5 min).
- Races: two students start together on the whistle, one in each L; the first to cross cone 1 scores 1 point. The other six watch and one of them referees (8 min).
- After each race, both runners go to the back of the line and a new referee steps in; everyone runs at least 4 races against different opponents.
- To finish, run one race on a mirrored course looping cone 3 to the left and talk about how it felt different (3 min).
Rules
- Go around the outside of the cones; knocking one over loses the race.
- Rest at least one minute between races.
- Safety: parallel courses stay 3 yards apart and the line waits behind the start.
- The referee makes the call and everyone accepts it.
Variations
Easier
Space the cones 3 yards apart and skip the first out-and-back.
Standard
Full three-cone course at 5 yards with races on the whistle.
Harder
Start on a visual signal from the referee and switch the turning direction every race.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: use cones 7 yards apart with wide wheelchair turns and race against a previous time.
- Hearing impairment: start on the referee's arm drop instead of the whistle.
- Higher level: touch the ground at every turn; lower level: race only against students of similar speed.
Learning goals
- Turn around a cone using short steps and an inward lean.
- Accelerate powerfully out of each change of direction.
- Compete while respecting opponents and the referee's calls.
Equipment for a class of 25
- cones: 18
- whistle: 1
Teacher tip
Watch for students who swing wide around cone 3; they usually stop dead instead of leaning in. Pair students by speed so races stay close.
