Three Billy Goats Gruff Bridge Crossing

Game based on the folk tale where billy goats cross bridges of different widths to bring grass to the meadow while the troll guards the river. Students practice dynamic balance on benches and lines, concentration and building confidence.

How to play

  1. Set 3 gym benches in parallel (one flipped to use the narrow beam) with mats on the sides, plus 2 ropes on the floor. A 10-foot river lies between the start and the meadow, where the troll moves.
  2. Each goat takes a bean bag of grass, chooses a bridge and crosses to drop it in the meadow hoop, then walks back along the sides.
  3. Halfway across, the troll asks, 'Who's trip-trapping over my bridge?' The goat answers 'little,' 'middle' or 'big goat' and crosses on tiptoe, sideways or with slow giant steps.
  4. If a goat steps in the river, the troll may tag them and they return to the start with the bean bag. Trolls never climb on bridges or push.
  5. Two trolls in pinnies switch every 3 minutes. Count bean bags after each turn; in the last turn, goats cross with the bean bag on their head.
