Thirty-Two Counts on Trial: Self-Assess Each Block
A hands-on dance test where students learn a 32-count phrase split into four blocks of eight, perform it in small groups and self-assess each block on memory, timing with the music and movement quality. The self-assessment is checked against the group's recording to see whether students perceive themselves as they really dance.
How to play
- Teach the 32-count phrase in blocks of eight, first without music and then with it, repeating each block three times (8 min).
- Free practice in pairs: each student identifies the block they know least and rehearses it with their partner (4 min).
- Groups of six perform in front of the class, twice in a row; one student films each group on the tablet (6 min).
- Self-assessment on the sheet: for each block, memory (I know it, unsure, I get lost) and timing (on time, rushing, behind) (3 min).
- In pairs, watch the group video and mark in another color what is actually seen in each block; discuss the biggest difference (4 min).
Rules
- Videos are watched only within the group and deleted at the end of the session.
- Dance in sneakers in a clear area, with no benches or equipment nearby.
- The self-assessment is completed before watching the video, never after.
- The audience applauds each group and does not comment out loud during the performance.
Variations
Easier
The phrase has 16 counts in two blocks and the music is slower.
Standard
A 32-count phrase in four blocks with self-assessment checked against video.
Harder
Perform the phrase in canon with a partner and add a criterion for synchronization.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: learns a version of the phrase with arms, trunk and wheelchair travel on the same counts.
- Hearing impairment: the beat is shown with a light or by a partner clapping visibly, and the count is shown with fingers.
- Stage anxiety: may perform in the last group and choose a spot in the back row.
Learning goals
- Memorize and reproduce a choreographic phrase in time with the music.
- Accurately self-assess their own performance block by block.
- Compare their own perception with objective evidence.
Equipment for a class of 25
- speaker: 1
- tablets or phones: 2
- worksheets: 30
- cones: 6
Teacher tip
Choose music with a very clear beat, around 110-120 beats per minute. The block the class misses most tells you what to review at the start of the next session.
