The Vain Little Mouse Movement Story
A movement version of the traditional Spanish tale of the vain little mouse: everyone is a mouse who sweeps, puts on a bow and gets visits from different animals they act out. Kids practice imitation, creative movement and many ways of traveling.
How to play
- Sitting circle (1 min): 'We're all little mice. We live in a tiny house and today we'll make it super clean.' Each child has a scarf nearby.
- Sweep the house (2 min): with a pretend broom, kids sweep while moving sideways and switch directions on a clap. 'Oh, a coin!' They squat down to pick it up.
- Off to the store (2 min): walk fast and happy all over the gym; when they arrive, tie the scarf on a wrist or neck like a bow, with help if needed.
- At the door (5 min): sit on the floor. Announce visitors: rooster (walk tall flapping wings), dog (on all fours), pig (heavy stomps), duck (squat walk). Everyone gets up, moves like the animal around the gym and comes back to sit at their door.
- The little mouse (2 min): the last visitor is a little mouse. Kids pair up, hold hands and dance turning with tiny steps.
Rules
- Act out the animal without touching others.
- Animals on all fours go slowly.
- On the clap, go back to your door.
- Dance carefully: turn slowly.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, the teacher acts out each animal and everyone copies; just hold the bow.
Standard
Use four animals and tie the bow on a wrist.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, one child picks the next animal and acts it out for others to guess.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: act out animals with arms, face and voice from their spot.
- Shy kids: start as the mouse watching from the door and join in when ready.
- Less fine-motor skill: the teacher ties the bow; more skill: help a buddy.
Learning goals
- Imitate animal movements and gestures.
- Follow a story sequence with the body.
- Enjoy a traditional tale and dance with a partner.
Equipment for a class of 25
- scarves: 20
Teacher tip
Tell the story with few words and big gestures. Skip the cat ending with very young groups and finish with the dance.
