The Tortoise and the Hare Finish Together
A Tortoise and the Hare movement story with no race and no winner: kids switch between the hare's speed and the tortoise's slow crawl with a shell on its back, and in the end everyone finishes together. They practice contrasting speeds and crawling balance.
How to play
- Before class, mark a big loop on the playground with cones (the forest path). Leave the beanbags on one side.
- Circle (2 min): 'The hare was super fast and the tortoise super slow. Today we'll be both!' Fast tambourine = hare; slow beats = tortoise.
- Hares (2 min): to fast taps, go around the loop with two-foot hare hops or a gentle run. 'The hare is tired and takes a nap!' Lie down under a pretend tree.
- Tortoises (3 min): each child puts a beanbag on their back (shell) and crawls very slowly without letting it fall. If it falls, put it back and keep going.
- Switching (3 min): alternate fast and slow beats; hares and tortoises transform each time. Add pauses: 'The tortoise hides its head!' Kids curl up.
- Finishing together (2 min): 'The hare waits for the tortoise and they finish holding hands.' In pairs, one hare and one tortoise walk the last lap together.
Rules
- Everyone goes the same way around the loop.
- Hares pass on the outside of tortoises.
- Nobody wins: everyone finishes together.
- With a shell on, look ahead.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, tortoises crawl without a beanbag.
Standard
Tortoise with a beanbag on its back plus speed changes.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, tortoises carry two beanbags or hares hop on one foot.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: roll fast as the hare and slow as the tortoise; the shell goes on the lap.
- Hearing impairment: hold up a hare picture or a tortoise picture to show the speed.
- More skilled kids carry more beanbags; less skilled kids walk low as tortoises.
Learning goals
- Switch between fast and slow traveling.
- Balance an object while crawling.
- Value friendship over winning.
Equipment for a class of 25
- cones: 8
- beanbags: 20
- hand drum (tambourine): 1
Teacher tip
Remember this story doesn't end with a winner; the point is finishing together. Keep the loop wide and clear so hares don't collide.
