The Feeder: Juggling Pass Fan
In groups of four, a feeder stands facing three partners spread in a fan and passes balls to them in turn while they toss them back, copying the passing pattern used by circus jugglers. Students practice accurate tossing, catching, and staying in sync as a group.
How to play
- Make groups of 4: one feeder facing three catchers standing in an arc about 10 feet away, each on a cone (2 min).
- One-ball round: the feeder makes an underhand, arcing toss to each catcher in order, who tosses it back the same way; 3 rounds (3 min).
- Two-ball round: the feeder holds one ball and one catcher holds another; both toss at the same time on "go" and the feeder moves on to the next catcher (5 min).
- Three-ball round: each catcher holds a ball and the feeder has none; they toss one after another down the line and the feeder sends each one straight back (5 min).
- Switch feeders every 90 seconds so everyone plays the role (3 min).
- Final challenge: count how many passes in a row your group makes without a drop; the group that improves its own record the most wins (2 min).
Rules
- All tosses are underhand with a soft arc.
- Say the catcher's name before you release the ball.
- If a ball drops, the group stops, picks it up, and starts the count over.
- Keep at least 12 feet between groups.
Variations
Easier
Move the cones in to about 6 feet and use scarves or beanbags instead of balls.
Standard
Three catchers at 10 feet with rounds from one to three balls.
Harder
Move back to 13 feet and have the feeder always toss with the non-dominant hand.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student takes the feeder role seated; catchers adjust their toss height.
- Hearing impairment: replace the spoken count with a head nod from the feeder.
- Skill level: less experienced groups stay with one or two balls and no record pressure.
Learning goals
- Toss accurately to different partners, adjusting force.
- Catch balls arriving at a steady rhythm.
- Sync actions with a group using clear signals.
Equipment for a class of 25
- juggling balls: 25
- cones: 24
Teacher tip
Feeders tend to get nervous and toss too fast at first, so slow claps from the teacher to set the beat help a lot. Setting the cones in an arc keeps catchers from creeping closer.
