Tetherball One-on-One Ladder
Tetherball duels where two players hit a ball tied to a pole in opposite directions, each trying to wrap the rope all the way around. Students work on hand striking, reading the ball's path, and individual competition with self-officiating in a ladder format.
How to play
- Set up 4 poles spaced apart and chalk a 3 m (10 ft) circle split in half around each; each player stays in their half (2 min).
- Partner rally: strike the ball with an open palm or soft fist in your direction; 2 minutes with each hand (4 min).
- Games: one player serves by tossing and hitting the ball; the winner wraps the whole rope in their direction. Each game lasts 2 minutes max.
- Ladder: 2 more students wait at each pole; the winner stays on and the loser moves to the line at the next pole (12 min).
- Wrap-up: everyone records their wins and the strategy that worked best on the sheet (2 min).
Rules
- No one leaves their half or touches the rope or pole.
- Hit the ball only once in a row; no catching or holding.
- Waiting players stand 2 m outside the circle, beyond the rope's reach.
- A foul gives the opponent a free hit.
Variations
Easier
Allow two hits in a row.
Standard
One hit at a time, half-circles, and 2-minute games.
Harder
Only the non-dominant hand may be used for the first 30 seconds.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: lower the ball height and have the opponent play seated or with the non-dominant hand.
- Visual impairment: use a bright ball, and the opponent says 'Ball!' on every hit.
- Fitness level: shorten games to 1 minute and rest while in line.
Learning goals
- Strike a ball moving in a circle accurately.
- Anticipate the ball's path and height.
- Compete with good sportsmanship and self-officiate.
Equipment for a class of 25
- tetherball sets: 4
- chalk: 4
- score sheets: 25
Teacher tip
Check the rope attachment and base stability before playing. Remind waiting students never to step toward the circle; the ball swings in a wide radius.
