Team Three-Point Contest Stations
A school version of the three-point contest with five shooting stations around the arc, five balls per station, and a final money ball worth double. Distance is adjusted for age and teams compete by adding points. Students work on outside shooting, shooting rhythm, and handling pressure.
How to play
- Place five hoops on the floor around the arc, about 16 feet from the rim for this age: two corners, two wings, and the top; put five balls in each hoop (3 min).
- Form teams of four: shooter, two ball runners who return balls to the hoops, and a timer.
- The shooter has 60 seconds to shoot all 25 balls starting in a corner; each make is 1 point and the fifth ball at each station is a money ball worth 2.
- Ball runners collect rebounds and place them back in the next hoop without crossing the shooter's path.
- Rotate roles until everyone has shot twice; allow 1 minute between turns to reset and breathe (14 min).
- Add up team points and ask shooters what they did to avoid rushing against the clock (2 min).
Rules
- Shoot with both feet inside the station's hoop.
- No skipping stations or going back to an earlier one.
- Safety: ball runners stay outside the arc and never under the rim during a shot.
- The timer calls out 10 seconds left.
Variations
Easier
Move the hoops to about 11 feet and allow 75 seconds.
Standard
Shoot from about 16 feet with five stations of five balls in 60 seconds.
Harder
Shoot from the official three-point line or choose one full rack of money balls.
Adaptations
- A student with limited mobility shoots from three close stations while a partner hands them each ball.
- For students who are hard of hearing, the timer shows the final seconds with fingers.
- Let each shooter choose between two hoop distances based on their level.
Learning goals
- Keep good outside shooting mechanics at a fast pace.
- Manage the clock and pressure without losing form.
- Support the team in the helper roles.
Equipment for a class of 25
- basketballs: 25
- basketball hoops: 6
- hoops: 30
- stopwatches: 6
Teacher tip
Many students rush so much they lose balance; remind them to square up and go straight up. If you are short on balls, use three per station and four stations.
