Team Superpowers Mission
Each team takes on a five-part mission requiring different skills, aim, balance, speed, memory, and calm, and decides who does which part. Students practice a variety of skills and learn that each person brings something different to the group.
How to play
- Set up five stations with challenge cards: aim (bean bags into hoops 5 yards away), balance (10 yards on a line with a bean bag on your head), speed (15-yard shuttle), memory (a 6-color cone sequence), and calm (a tennis ball on the back of your hand for 20 seconds).
- Make five teams of 5. In 2 minutes, each student names their superpower and the team assigns the tasks, one per person.
- First mission (8 min): the team rotates stations every 90 seconds; at each one, the chosen student performs while the rest cheer. Each task completed is worth 1 point.
- Second mission (8 min): each student tries a task they are not good at, coached by a teammate. Each improvement over the first try is worth 1 point.
- Scoring (2 min): add up both missions. All teams compare how many points they earned thanks to helping each other.
- Wrap-up (3 min): each student names a superpower they discovered in a teammate.
Rules
- Nobody may say someone is no good at a task.
- At the aim station, toss only when no one is collecting.
- At the speed station, run in lanes separated by cones.
Variations
Easier
Make tasks easier: hoops at 3 yards, a 5-yard line, and a 4-color sequence.
Standard
Five varied tasks assigned by superpower plus a second mission focused on improvement.
Harder
Do the tasks in pairs from the same team with less time.
Adaptations
- A student with limited mobility can do the aim or memory task seated.
- For a student with low vision, use clap patterns instead of colors for the memory task.
- For fitter students, repeat the speed task twice and do the aim task with the non-dominant hand.
Learning goals
- Practice a variety of motor skills.
- Recognize their own strengths and those of others.
- See the group's diversity as a strength.
Equipment for a class of 25
- cones: 20
- hoops: 5
- bean bags: 15
- tennis balls: 5
- challenge cards: 5
Teacher tip
Watch that no one always gets stuck with the task nobody wants; if it happens, ask the team what that student's superpower is. The second mission is the key: stress that helping is how you win.
