Team Jump Rope Routine to Music
Groups of five create and perform a one-minute jump rope routine to music, combining synchronized single-rope jumping, a partner trick, and a long rope entry. Students work on rhythm, group composition, and performing in front of an audience.
How to play
- Make groups of 5 with five single ropes and one long rope. Explain the four required elements: synchronized jumping, a partner trick, a long rope entry, and a formation change (2 min).
- Creating: each group decides the order of the elements and counts it in blocks of 8 beats to the music (6 min).
- Rehearsal: the song plays on a loop and groups run their full routine at least three times (8 min).
- Performance: each group performs once while the class watches for two things: were they in sync, and were all four elements visible (7 min).
- Wrap-up: each group gets one positive comment and one suggestion from another group (2 min).
Rules
- The routine lasts 45 to 75 seconds and includes all four elements.
- Each group rehearses in its own area, 13 feet away from other groups.
- Every member jumps at some point; no one only turns.
- The audience stays quiet during performances and applauds at the end.
Variations
Easier
Only three required elements, with the teacher counting the 8-beat blocks out loud.
Standard
A one-minute routine with all four required elements.
Harder
Add Double Dutch or a criss-cross trick performed in sync by the whole group.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student turns the long rope from a chair and leads the formation changes with hand signals.
- Shyness: two groups can perform at the same time in separate areas to reduce the spotlight.
- Fitness level: each member picks a trick they have mastered; the group does not demand the same level from everyone.
Learning goals
- Fit jump rope skills to the structure of a song.
- Compose a sequence as a group and share out roles.
- Perform for classmates and give feedback on other groups' work.
Equipment for a class of 25
- individual jump ropes: 25
- long ropes: 5
- music: 1
Teacher tip
Pick music around 120 beats per minute with a strong beat. If a group gets stuck, suggest opening in a line with 8 basic bounces.
