Team Handball: Two-Pivot Attack vs. a 6-0
Against a packed 6-0 defense, a back or a wing transitions into a second pivot (circle runner) during the attack. Students practice screens between pivots, ball movement to open gaps and reading the right moment to make the transition.
How to play
- Make teams of 6 plus a goalkeeper and explain the idea (3 min): when the ball goes to the wing, the back on that side runs in to the 6-meter line and becomes a second pivot.
- Phase 1 (5 min): 4-on-4 in one half (two backs and two pivots against the four middle defenders); the pivots screen defenders to open up a shot from 9 meters (30 ft).
- Phase 2 (10 min): 6-on-6 with a goalkeeper against a 6-0. The offense must transition to two pivots before the fourth pass; a goal by either pivot is worth 2 and anything else is 1.
- Switch the attacking team after every possession. Resting students count how many times the offense transitioned in time.
- Final game (2 minutes per team) applying the ideas freely.
Rules
- Pivots may screen with their body but can't grab or push with their arms.
- The 6-meter area belongs to the goalkeeper; landing inside after a jump shot is legal, but you can't catch the ball inside.
- No jump shots fired straight into an opposing pivot who has their back turned.
Variations
Easier
Play 5-on-5 with one fixed pivot and make the transition optional.
Standard
6-on-6 with a required transition to two pivots against a 6-0.
Harder
The defense can switch from 6-0 to 5-1 on the goalkeeper's call, and the offense must decide whether to keep two pivots or go back to one.
Adaptations
- A student with limited mobility can play center and decide when the transition happens.
- For students who are hard of hearing, agree on a visual signal (hand on chest) for the transition.
- For fitness, have pivots rotate with the backs every two attacks, since the contact is tiring.
Learning goals
- Execute the transition from a back or wing into a second pivot.
- Coordinate screens between pivots to create shooting lanes.
- Keep offensive balance in case of a turnover.
Equipment for a class of 25
- team handballs: 4
- pinnies: 14
- goals: 2
Teacher tip
Watch contact along the 6-meter line: screens must be stationary and made with the torso. If they get stuck, drop the defense to four players, then build back up to six.
