Team Handball: Playing Short-Handed After a Suspension
A 5-on-5 game with goalkeepers where, every two minutes, one team loses a player for one minute and must reorganize short-handed. Students learn to manage a numbers disadvantage, defend compactly and attack patiently on the power play.
How to play
- Make four teams of 5 plus a goalkeeper on two courts. Explain that the suspension mimics the two-minute penalty, cut to one minute here (3 min).
- Every 2 minutes, blow the whistle and point to a player, who sits in the substitution area for 1 timed minute.
- The short-handed team defends tight at 6 m (20 ft) and holds the ball on offense with safe passes.
- The power-play team looks for the open player with fast ball movement; a power-play goal is worth 1 and a short-handed goal 3.
- Play two 8-minute halves with a 1-minute break to agree on short-handed defense (17 min).
- Wrap-up: each team counts goals allowed while short-handed and what worked when it held (4 min).
Rules
- A suspended player may not return early, even after a goal.
- Suspensions are spread out: nobody sits more than once.
- Only the goalkeeper enters the 6 m goal area.
- Defend with your torso, never with shoves.
Variations
Easier
Suspensions last 30 seconds and there is no pass limit.
Standard
1-minute suspensions every 2 minutes of play.
Harder
Both teams may be short at once, playing 4-on-4 or 3-on-4.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: time the suspensions or play goalkeeper with a soft ball.
- Visual impairment: use high-contrast pinnies and have teammates call out the open player.
- Lower fitness: the suspension doubles as a rest, and these students can be picked to sit.
Learning goals
- Reorganize the team when down a player.
- Exploit an extra player with fast ball movement.
- Manage emotions when penalized.
Equipment for a class of 25
- team handballs: 4
- goals: 4
- pinnies: 12
- stopwatches: 2
Teacher tip
Present the suspension as a tactical tool, not a punishment, and pick players of all skill levels. Reward patience on the power play, where teams tend to rush.
