Team Handball Fast Break and Get-Back 3-on-3
A full-court transition game: one group of three attacks, and as soon as they shoot or lose the ball, the other trio fast-breaks while the attackers sprint back to defend. Students work on quick transitions, the outlet pass and getting back on defense.
How to play
- Use a team handball court with two goals and a goalie at each. Make teams of 3 in pinnies, one team at each end and the rest waiting in the corners (3 min).
- Team A attacks the far goal against Team B, which defends 3-on-3.
- As soon as A shoots, loses the ball or concedes, the goalie or the defender who wins it makes a quick pass and B fast-breaks the other way.
- Team A sprints back to defend; if they are late, B attacks with a numbers advantage. After B's attack, A leaves the court and the next trio comes on to defend against B.
- Play 15 minutes continuously. Each goal is worth 1 point, and a fast-break goal in under 5 seconds is worth 2.
- Pause for 1 minute halfway through and ask which outlet pass was the fastest.
Rules
- Only the goalie may enter the 6-meter goal area.
- The first pass after winning the ball must happen within 2 seconds.
- When getting back, run while watching the ball and never cut in front of opponents on the break.
- No holding or pushing; rough contact gives the other team a goal.
Variations
Easier
The fast-breaking trio gets a 3-second head start before the other team can get back.
Standard
Continuous 3-on-3 full-court transitions with two goalies.
Harder
The team that loses the ball must touch its own 9-meter line before defending, creating overloads.
Adaptations
- Students with limited mobility: play goalie or act as the outlet passer who starts each fast break from the goal area.
- Students who are deaf or hard of hearing: signal trio changes with a hand cue from the teacher or the goalie.
- Lower fitness levels: may come off after their attack without the full sprint back, swapping with a teammate.
Learning goals
- Pass quickly after winning the ball.
- Get back to defend your own goal after losing possession.
- Pace your effort through continuous attacks and recoveries.
Equipment for a class of 25
- team handballs: 3
- goals: 2
- pinnies: 24
Teacher tip
This is very intense: in hot weather, run two 7-minute blocks with a water break. Goalies are key for the outlet pass; encourage them to throw quickly to the wings.
