Team Handball 5-on-5 Zone Defense Game
A 5-on-5 team handball game plus goalies where the defending team must always set up in a zone along the 6-meter line. Students work on shifting as a unit, helping each other on defense and, on offense, moving the ball quickly to open gaps.
How to play
- Make 4 teams of 6 (5 court players and a goalie) in pinnies. Two teams play while the other two watch from the sideline (3 min).
- Explain the zone: the 5 defenders line up on the 6-meter line, each covering their own space, and all shift together toward the ball side.
- The offense swings the ball side to side with quick passes so the defense cannot get there in time, looking to shoot from 9 meters or through any gap that opens.
- Play 5 minutes, then switch: the watching teams come on. Each team plays 3 games in total (about 20 min).
- Observers count how many times the defense shifted well and share it after each game.
Rules
- Only the goalie may step into the 6-meter goal area.
- Traveling, double dribble and the 3-second rule follow basic team handball rules.
- Defenders may step out 1 yard to pressure the shooter, but never grab, push or hit the shooting arm.
- Each goal is worth 1 point; a goal after 4 or more passes is worth 2.
Variations
Easier
The defense sets up in a zone but may not leave the 6-meter line, and the offense plays with 6.
Standard
5-on-5 with a required zone defense and double points after 4 passes.
Harder
The defense switches to a 3-2 zone with two players stepping up to pressure the backs.
Adaptations
- Students with limited mobility: play goalie with a goal made smaller with cones, or a fixed pivot on offense.
- Students who are deaf or hard of hearing: signal game changes by raising a pinnie, not only with the whistle.
- Lower fitness levels: sub in and out freely with the watching teams.
Learning goals
- Shift on defense toward the ball side.
- Move the ball quickly to break down the defense.
- Work with teammates by covering nearby spaces.
Equipment for a class of 25
- team handballs: 2
- goals: 2
- pinnies: 12
Teacher tip
Before the first game, have the defense shift without a ball by following your hand. Use size 1 or 2 handballs so shooting stays safe.
