Team Cross-Country: Top Four Score
A cross-country race of about 1,500 m where each team of six adds up the places of its top four runners and the lowest total wins, just like real cross-country scoring. Students work on endurance, pacing, and the idea that every runner counts.
How to play
- Mark a 500 m loop with cones around the field or the edge of the blacktop. Make 4 teams of 6 with colored pinnies (3 minutes).
- Walk the course with the whole class so everyone knows the route and the turns (4 minutes).
- Each team plans its strategy: who leads the pack, who runs with whom, and how fast they'll start (2 minutes).
- Three-lap race with a mass start. At the finish, the teacher hands each runner a card with their place (about 10 minutes).
- Each team adds the places on its top four cards; the fifth and sixth runners break ties. Lowest total wins (3 minutes).
- Three-minute cool-down walk: did running together help? Who passed someone at the end and changed the result?
Rules
- Always run outside the cones; no cutting corners.
- Pass on the left and call out as you go by.
- Walking for a few seconds is allowed if needed, but don't stop on the course.
- Place cards are handed out in finish order and can't be swapped.
Variations
Easier
Two 400 m laps, with each team's top three scoring.
Standard
Three 500 m laps, with the top four scoring.
Harder
Four laps, and the team loses two points if its sixth runner finishes more than two minutes behind its first.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: complete a shorter inside loop with their own place, which counts at an agreed value.
- Visual impairment: run tethered to a sighted guide with a short ribbon.
- Lower fitness: allow run-walk intervals; their finish still counts as a tiebreaker.
Learning goals
- Keep a steady pace during a distance race.
- Plan a race strategy as a team.
- Understand that the team result depends on every member.
Equipment for a class of 25
- cones: 20
- pinnies: 24
- place cards: 25
Teacher tip
Schedule it on a mild day and have water at the finish. Stack place cards numbered 1 to 25 in order and have an injured student hand them out.
